HBO Europe’s Communion by Anna Zamecka wins European Film Award
 11 Dec 2017
HBO Europe feature-length documentary Communion by Anna Zamecka has won Best European Documentary at the European Film Awards 2017.

The coming-of-age story about 14-year-old Ola, who takes on responsibilities far beyond her age caring for her father and autistic brother, took the top documentary prize at the awards ceremony in Berlin last night.  It tops off an incredible year for Polish filmmaker Zamecka and her debut film, which has picked up 23 Grand Prix since its premiere at Locarno last year. Communion was produced by HBO Europe, Wajda Studio and Otter Films.

The win for Communion comes two weeks after international recognition for another HBO Europe documentary, Mila Turajlic's The Other Side of Everything, which scooped the top prize of Best Feature-Length Documentary at IDFA (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam).

HBO Europe has been producing award-winning documentaries in Central and Eastern Europe since 2007, and original series in the region since 2010. Current and forthcoming documentaries on the HBO Europe slate include Lukáš Kokeš's Nothing Like Before, Tereza Nvotova's The Lust for Power, Jan Gebert's When the War Comes and Maciej Bochniak's Ethiopiques – Revolt of the Soul.
