Zelensky signs amendments to cinema law for cash rebates in Ukraine
 18 Oct 2019
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has signed a law introducing amendments to the law on state support for cinematography in Ukraine on granting a state subsidy for the reimbursement of a portion of qualified expenses incurred by a foreign subject of cinematography during the production (creation) of a film in Ukraine, the press service of the head of state has reported.

In particular, the law envisages the granting of a state subsidy for the reimbursement by foreign filmmakers of 25% of funds spent on the production of films in Ukraine. In addition, foreign filmmakers may receive a further 5% refund if they use during the creation of films the works of Ukrainian authors or a story about Ukraine, including the subject of armed aggression against Ukraine.

It is expected that the implementation of the law will help promote a positive image of Ukraine abroad, popularization of Ukrainian authors and their works in the world, cooperation and creation of joint film projects with leading Western producers.

On September 20, the Verkhovna Rada passed a law providing for compensation to foreign filmmakers for the funds spent on film production in Ukraine (cash rebate).
