International productions are returning to Prague
 15 Jun 2021
Large foreign film and television projects are once again being shot in the Czech Republic, and some well-known actors are coming to the country. The film crews are attracted to the country by the film stimuli there. Thanks to them, part of Netflix's most expensive project, The Gray Man, will be shot in Prague in July. This was announced on Facebook by the State Fund of Cinematography, which provides film incentives. Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans star in the CIA thriller.

"The production has partnered with the City Hall of Prague 1, the Prague Transport Company, the police and firefighters and will support the development of Prague 1 through fees and additional contributions in the amount of about five million crowns," said the fund for the production of The Gray Man. Information on secured alternative parking will be available to residents on the Prague 1 website and soon on the upcoming website www.filmpraha1.cz, where maps with deadlines will also be available.

In recent days, actor Adam Sandler has appeared in Prague, starring in the Netflix film based on the book Spaceman of Bohemia. It was written by the writer Jaroslav Kalfař, who was born in Prague and lives in the USA. The film, based on a book published in 2017, is directed by Johan Renck, who is, among other things, behind the series hit Chernobyl.

The main character of the story is an astronaut sent from a small country in the middle of Europe on a one-man mission to the planet Venus, where he is to collect mysterious ancient dust. The connection with the Earth is soon broken and its only companion remains an imaginary spider. Little does he know, however, that somewhere behind him are the Russians, who are undertaking their own secret mission to Venus.

Orlando Bloom also returned to Prague to shoot the second series of the Carnival Row series produced by Amazon. The neo-Victorian fantasy series, a joint venture of the American companies Amazon Studios and Legendary Television, has already brought over three billion crowns to the Czech Republic.

According to the State Cinematography Fund, the volume of filming will return to the level of 2019 this year, i.e. to the level before the coronavirus pandemic. The year 2019 was a record year for the Czech film industry so far, thanks to the system of film incentives, nine billion crowns of foreign investment flowed into the Czech Republic. However, according to the fund, it would be necessary, as in 2019, to increase the budget of the incentive system from 800 million crowns by at least another 500 million for the renewed influx of foreign crews. Due to the situation with the pandemic, the fund does not yet know the volume of last year's investments.

The tendency of the increase, especially of serial production for streaming platforms, is related to the development of the Internet as an entertainment distribution channel, which leads from the producer directly to the viewer. The coronavirus crisis accelerated this growth, with people being reliant on television and prepaid online broadcasts at the time of the lockdown, with the exception of listening and reading activities.
