Statement of the Management Board of TVN SA
 12 Aug 2021
TVN has published an official statement following the voting of the so-called “lex TVN”. “The Sejm's decision to amend the Broadcasting Act is aimed directly at TVN, and is also an unprecedented attack on freedom of speech and media independence. We will resolutely and consistently defend TVN24 and other channels of TVN Grupa Discovery.

The result of today's vote undermines property rights, causing concern for foreign investors in Poland. It undoubtedly also undermines the foundations of the Polish-American alliance built over the last 30 years.

We appeal to the Senate and the President of the Republic of Poland to reject the draft in its present form. It depends on this whether Poland will still be perceived in the international arena as a democratic country and credible for investors.”

On Wednesday, at a press conference, Ned Price, a spokesman for the US State Department, was asked by TVN correspondent Marcin Wrona to comment on the progress of legislative work regarding the amendment to the Broadcasting Act. “Certainly, if this law comes into force, it will have a personal impact on you and your colleagues,” he told the TVN correspondent. Price assured that the US administration is closely monitoring the matter, and representatives of the US authorities have discussed it many times with the Polish government. He noted that "very high-level" talks were also held in the last hours. „The Polish government can now show that it supports democracy not only with words but also with actions. Free media makes democracy stronger and the Atlantic alliance more resistant to attacks,” emphasized Ned Price. He stressed that NATO is based not only on shared security interests, but also on democratic principles. He noted that the US administration is also following the draft law, adopted in June by the Polish Sejm, blocking claims regarding heirless property.

Shortly before the votes on the entire draft amendment and amendments proposed to it by MPs Marek Suski from PiS, the representative of the applicants, announced that another amendment would be proposed in the Senate: the requirement to have at least 51% capital from the European Economic Area will not apply to broadcasters of channels with satellite licenses.

“The point is that broadcasters who have satellite licenses do not have to meet the 49% requirement capital from outside the European Economic Area. So that you do not say that we want to liquidate TVN24,” added the PiS MP.
