Latvia has offered Germany to move DW's Moscow office to Riga if Russia upholds its broadcasting ban.

Minister of Justice Janis Bordans believes that it will be best to set up an editorial office in Riga: “This is the closest and largest city to Moscow, so DW will be able to continue to cover current news from Russia, Belarus and the region. Riga has the Baltic Aviation Center and a highly developed IT infrastructure - all to make the city a base in the DW region.”

According to the Minister, the Medusa website has been successfully operating from Riga for the last few years, becoming one of the largest news sites in Russia and in the Russian-speaking diaspora around the world. In addition, Mr. Bordans noted, Latvia is a world leader in the press freedom index, so journalists can be sure that their work in Latvia will be respected.

According to the DW website, since 2005 DW has had valid licenses to broadcast its TV channels in English and German - DW English and DW Deutsch. According to the Russian requirement, the DW TV channel broadcast the program window in Russian in German.

DW now maintains its Russian-language channel on YouTube video hosting. The broadcaster is a social and legal media. DW is financed from the state budget of Germany, but the independence of editorial policy is ensured by law and the supervisory board.
