Google suspends monetization of content denying war in Ukraine
 15 Apr 2022
Google has announced that its AdSense advertising service has suspended monetization of content that denies or justifies the war in Ukraine. Google has sent emails to users of the platform warning them of new policies on the content of the war in Ukraine and the expansion of the current monetization policy.

"Because of the war in Ukraine, we will stop monetizing content that uses, denies or justifies war. … The cessation of monetization of this content includes, but is not limited to, allegations that victims are responsible for their own tragedy, or similar allegations of victims, such as allegations that "Ukraine is committing genocide or deliberately attacking its own citizens," the message states.

According to SEJ, AdSense policy is an agreement, so the publisher must follow the rules set out in the program. If they continue to publish content that violates Google's policies, they will need to remove Google AdSense from those pages. Moreover, publishers also need to pay more attention to comments and forums on their platforms. If the content violates these policies, Google may either suspend monetization or delete the publisher's AdSense account.

After the start of a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, Google announced the shutdown of monetization of YouTube channels for residents of Russia. Because of this decision alone, Russian bloggers and media companies that have made money from integrated advertising on YouTube will lose about $100 million a month. In addition, bloggers from other countries who had an audience in Russia will not be able to make money in the Russian market - this can significantly affect the content of bloggers, especially in Ukraine. Google, in cooperation with the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, has also launched a project to digitize the consequences of the Russian invasion in the destroyed cities of Ukraine.
