Ukrainian series wins Serial Killer festival in Brno
 26 Sep 2022
This year's winner of the Serial Killer festival, which took place in Brno for the fifth time, was the Ukrainian series by director Iryna Gromozda, Picnic. The Croatian TV series The Last Socialist Artefact received an honorable mention from the jury.

Picnic was presented by Kateryna Vyshnevska, Head of Development and Co-Productions, Film.UA Group.

The story starts with Oleh’s celebration of his 40th birthday. Three married couples and their children gather on the seashore to celebrate together. What no one knows is that Oleh was fired from his job in the morning, he is having a mid-life crisis, and his wife Vera is not having the happiest time of her life either. Thus, in the very first episode of the Ukrainian drama, Oleh and Vira’s family system implodes in a spectacular way. Subsequently, the narrative slows down and gradually reveals what all led to the tension in the seemingly happy family. In doing so, it reveals the problems of the adults, but also the perspective of their teenage daughter and the disturbed relationships of the whole initially friendly body made up of several families.

This year, the award for the best web series went to the new web series of the Czech Television Five Years. Viewers can watch it exclusively on Czech Television's iVysilani, starting on Monday, September 26. The ten-part series was based on a script by Sára Zeithammerová. Alžběta Malá, Samuel Toman, Pavel Řezníček, Vanda Hybnerová and Dana Marková play in the story, which deals with the topic of sexual violence. Directed by Damián Vondrášek .

The laureate of the fourth year of the Progressive Killer award for exceptional personalities in television production with their own vision and pan-European reach was TV Nova content development director Michal Reitler.

The festival started on Tuesday and ended during the weekend. It ended with the announcement of the awards, at the same time the new season of the cult series Kingdom by Lars von Trier is presented in the Czech premiere. The Kingdom was presented in collaboration with Aerofilms and KVIFF.TV. The entire third season of the series, together with the two previous seasons and an almost complete film retrospective of the Danish director, will appear in Czech cinemas and on the VOD platform KVIFF.TV already this fall. The new five-part Kingdom series, subtitled Exodus, has so far only been shown at the international festival in Venice.

After two years affected by the coronavirus pandemic, when the festival also offered an online program, this year the organizers focused mainly on screenings in cinemas, supplemented by an accompanying program in the streets, in cooperation with Czech Television and other stations.
