EBU: Baltic states now share their European perspectives
Latvian public service media organization, LSM, has joined Estonia’s ERR and Lithuania’s LRT in A European Perspective, EBU reports.
A European Perspective brings together public service media organizations to share online news and offer audiences fresh insights into pan-European issues. The three Baltic EBU Members have joined in phase II of the project and will bring a different range of perspectives from across the region, highlighting our Members’ roles in upholding democracy in their countries. The first stories contributed by these organizations illustrate just how important it is to receive reporting directly from states bordering Russia, particularly in these challenging times. Thanks to the EBU’s AI-translation app EuroVOX, and recommendation app Peach, broadcasters in France, Belgium, Ireland and more have been able to share news from the Baltic region on their own websites, in their own languages, via A European Perspective newsfeeds. LSM Digital Media Director Voldemārs Oliņš said: “Our contribution to A European Perspective will, no doubt, be of benefit to all the partners of the project... [and] of interest to European audiences, particularly taking into account the current geopolitical situation. By providing more stories and analysis, we can contribute to the diversity of Europe and broaden insights into Europe’s shared challenges.” The project also showcases how public service media are investing in digital innovation in the region. Monika Garbačiauskaitė-Budrienė, Director General of LRT, added: “The old ways public service media operated don’t work, and innovation is not just about technology, but also about ways of thinking if we want to reconnect with our audiences and serve the interests of all. I believe that the greatest value of this project is that by sharing and integrating each other's news on our platforms, we will help bring our audiences closer together.” Anvar Samost, Head of News & Sports ERR, said: "Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian public broadcasters have always been very much outward looking in news production. The European Perspective adds entire new range of audiences." The Members of all three Baltic states bolster A European Perspective by providing European audiences with trustworthy news from a variety of viewpoints, especially as the media in these countries are ranked high in the 2022 World Press Freedom Index. A European Perspective includes Members from Belgium (RTBF), Estonia (ERR), Lithuania (LRT), Latvia (LSM), Finland (Yle), France (France Télévisions), Germany (BR-ARD), Ireland (RTÉ), Portugal (RTP), Spain (RTVE), Sweden (SR), Switzerland (SWI swissinfo.ch) as well as ARTE, the Franco-German broadcaster, the Constructive Institute from Denmark and Agence France Presse (AFP).
