Gvaramia to receive International Press Freedom Award
 30 Jun 2023
The Committee to Protect Journalists has announced the names of the four extraordinary journalists who will receive the organization’s 2023 International Press Freedom Awards.

The awardees are Ferdinand Ayité, director of the Togolese investigative outlet L’Alternative; Shahina K.K., senior editor for the Indian magazine Outlook; Nika Gvaramia, founder of the Georgian broadcaster Mtavari Arkhi (Main Channel); and María Teresa Montaño, founder and editor of the Mexican outlet The Observer.

In the face of a stark decline in press freedom worldwide, all are being recognized for continuing to report the news amid government crackdowns, kidnapping, exile, and the increasing criminalization of their work.

“Attacks on the press are rising, yet journalists continue to step up and report on the vital issues that empower us all,” said CPJ President Jodie Ginsberg on Thursday. “It is our honor to recognize this year’s awardees: formidable reporters working tirelessly to expose corruption, abuse, and wrongdoing despite considerable efforts to silence them.”

CPJ will also honor Alberto Ibargüen, president of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, with the 2023 Gwen Ifill Press Freedom Award, an award presented annually by CPJ’s board of directors in recognition of an individual’s extraordinary and sustained commitment to press freedom.

The awards will be presented on Thursday, November 16, 2023, in New York City.
